Bank robber is sentenced to 57 months in prison

A federal judge today sentenced Richard B. Jones, 43, of Providence, to 57 months in prison for a bank robbery in March at a Coastway Credit Union branch in Providence.

United States Attorney Robert Clark Corrente announced the sentence, which U.S. District Court Judge Mary M. Lisi imposed in U.S. District Court, Providence.

At a hearing in June when Jones pled guilty to a bank robbery, Assistant U.S. Attorney James H. Leavey said that the government could prove that, on March 15, Jones went into the Coastway Credit Union on Green Street in Providence and handed a teller a note claiming that he had a gun and demanding money, “all hundreds.” The teller gave him $1,100 and he fled.

A witness picked Jones out of a photo array and identified him as the robber. Jones subsequently admitted to Providence detectives that he had committed the robbery.

Providence Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated the robbery.
