FORMER RESIDENT OF NASHUA , NH PLEADS GUILTY TO TAX EVASION, MAIL FRAUD AND IDENTITY THEFT OFFENSES CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE -- Michael Monahan, formerly a resident of Nashua, New Hampshire has pleaded guilty to tax evasion, mail fraud, and identity theft related offenses. During a hearing in United States District Court earlier today, Monahan, admitted that he and his former business partner failed to pay federal income, social security and medicare taxes on more than $13 million in wages they paid to employees of three temporary employment businesses they operated and owned. Monahan also admitted that he and his partner avoided paying more than $365,000 in workers’ compensation insurance premiums from 2000 to 2004, by submitting applications to the Massachusetts Workers’ Compensation Rating and Inspection Bureau that falsely reported the number of employees who worked for the businesses, falsely described the work the employees performed and under reported the businesses’ estimated payroll. Monahan also admitted that he used the names of two other people to obtain fraudulent North Carolina driver’s licenses in 2007, and that he used the driver’s licenses to obtain fraudulent United States passports in September 2007. Monahan is scheduled to be sentenced by Chief United States District Court Judge Stephen McAuliffe on August 21, 2008. United States Attorney Colantuono thanked Douglas Bricker, the Special Agent in Charge of the Boston Field Office of the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division, Anthony DiPaolo, the Chief of Investigations, Insurance Fraud Bureau of Massachusetts, James P. Ennis, the Special Agent in Charge of the Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service’s Field Office in Boston, and Warren Bamford, the Special Agent in Charge of the Boston Division of the FBI for their agencies investigation of this case.
