Seabrook Man Pleads Guilty to Bank Robbery

CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE—A resident of Seabrook, New Hampshire, has pleaded guilty to the December 16, 2008 robbery of the Citizens Bank located at 161 Lafayette Road, Hampton Falls, New Hampshire, Acting United States Attorney for the District of New Hampshire Michael J. Gunnison announced today.

On December 16, 2008, a lone robber entered the Citizens Bank and handed the tellers a note demanding money and threatening the use of a weapon. Tellers handed over a sum of money and the robber, who was described by witnesses as a white male, five feet five inches tall, in his 30s, and wearing a light-colored jacket, a hat and sunglasses, left the bank on foot. Witnesses saw the robber get into a blue pickup bearing Maine license plates. The pickup was stopped after a short pursuit by the police.

The passenger in the truck, later identified as Freddy Delavega, was on a cell phone and holding a knife to his own throat. He threatened to cut himself if the police came any closer. After a brief standoff, the police were able to subdue Delavega and prevent him from seriously harming himself. Delavega was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries before being charged with the robbery. Most of the money taken in the robbery was recovered from Delavega.

The driver of the pickup, who had offered to give Delavega a ride, was later determined to be unaware of Delavega’s plan to rob the bank, and was not charged.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for October 1, 2009 in the United States District Court. Delavega faces a maximum statutory sentence of 20 years in prison. His sentence under the advisory sentencing guidelines is likely to be less than 20 years.

The police departments for Hampton Falls, Portsmouth, Seabrook, and Kingston, the New Hampshire State Police, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation assisted in the investigation of the robbery.
